Photo Session Prep Guide

1. Before the Session

  • Confirm Session Details:

    • Double-check the date, time, and location.

    • Confirm any specific locations or spots you'd like to be photographed.

  • Choose the Right Outfit:

    • Wear comfortable clothing that reflects your personal style.

    • Avoid overly busy patterns, logos, or neon colors (they can distract from the focus).

    • Consider the weather and dress accordingly (e.g., layering for cooler temperatures).

    • Coordinate outfits with others if applicable (family, friends, or couples).

    • Bring accessories (scarves, hats, jewelry) to add variety.

  • Check the Weather:

    • Keep an eye on the forecast to ensure you’re prepared for rain, heat, or wind.

    • If the weather looks uncertain, discuss with your photographer about possible rescheduling or backup plans.

  • Grooming:

    • Hair: Get a fresh trim if needed, but avoid drastic cuts or styles right before the shoot.

    • Skin: Moisturize and use any makeup you feel comfortable with.

    • Nails: Consider having nails clean and polished if they’ll be visible in the photos.

    • If you wear makeup, opt for a matte finish (shiny skin can reflect light and look uneven).

2. For Your Pets

  • Grooming:

    • Give your pet a good brush before the shoot to remove any tangles or loose fur.

    • If your pet is due for a bath, consider doing so before the session for a fresh, clean look.

  • Pack Pet Essentials:

    • Bring your pet’s favorite treats to keep them engaged or as rewards for posing.

    • Pack a favorite toy to help with attention and calmness.

    • If your pet is prone to getting dirty, bring a towel or wipes for quick clean-ups.

  • Prepare for Their Comfort:

    • Bring water and a bowl to keep them hydrated, especially on warmer days.

    • Consider a portable pet bed or blanket if they’ll need a rest during the session.

  • Behavior and Training:

    • If your pet has specific commands or tricks (sit, stay, etc.), work with them beforehand so they’re responsive during the shoot.

    • If your pet gets anxious, make sure they’re familiar with the location ahead of time to ease their nerves.

  • Leash & Safety:

    • If your pet will be off-leash, be sure to bring a leash for safety during transition times.

    • Consider a harness instead of a collar for comfort and to avoid any choking.

3. On the Day of the Session

  • Get Enough Rest:

    • Ensure you’re well-rested the night before the shoot for a refreshed, energized look.

    • If bringing your pet, make sure they’re also well-rested and not too overstimulated.

  • Arrive Early:

    • Aim to arrive at least 10–15 minutes early to avoid feeling rushed.

  • Pack a Bag with Essentials:

    • Water and snacks (for both you and your pet).

    • Touch-up makeup (blotting paper, lipstick, etc.).

    • Hairbrush or comb for quick touch-ups.

    • Hairspray

    • Mirror

    • Lint Roller

    • Comfortable shoes (if walking a lot in the location).

    • Tissues or wet wipes (for unexpected messes or sweaty hands).

    • Extra layers (jackets, scarves) if it’s a chilly day.

    • Pet essentials (treats, toys, leash, and waste bags).

    • Prop (if applicable): If you'd like to add a personal or creative touch to your photos, consider bringing meaningful props. These could include: musical instrument, sports equipment, flowers, signs, cap/gown, sentimental items, items related to hobbies, balloons, etc. These props help tell your story and make the session uniquely yours!

4. During the Session

  • Relax and Have Fun:

    • Focus on enjoying the moment, rather than worrying about perfect poses. Authentic moments are often the best.

  • Communicate with Your Photographer:

    • Share any special requests or poses you have in mind.

    • If you’re including your pet in the photos, discuss any tips or tricks for getting their attention.

  • Stay Hydrated:

    • Drink water throughout the session to avoid dehydration, especially if it’s hot outside. Don’t forget your pet’s water too!

  • Take Breaks When Needed:

    • If you or your pet start to feel tired or uncomfortable, let your photographer know. It’s okay to take a quick breather.

5. After the Session

  • Review and Reflect:

    • Take note of any preferences for the type of photos you love (e.g., candid shots, group poses, etc.) and share your feedback.

  • Stay Connected:

    • Follow up with the photographer about the expected delivery time for photos.

    • Let them know if you plan to use the photos for any specific purposes (e.g., prints, website, social media).
